Have you ever wanted to learn how to program?  Ever wanted to learn how program for free?  Have you ever wanted to learn how to program from worlds largest on-line search provider?  Well now you can!

Google Code University is a free site that has on-line courses to teach you how to  program in many different programing languages.  It include on-line video lectures, written material, and code examples.  Currently I am taking the Python class so I am sure you will see some Python projects on this site soon.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Well, actually, if it’s a VGA picture with 24bit color depth, then it’s 640x480x24bits = 7,372,800 bits = 921,600 bytes. If each byte is one character, assuming an average word length of 8 (with a space after each word), we get about 115,200 words. So our ancestors were off by two orders of magnitude. Maybe they were assuming 200×150 images? Whatever

Testdisk great piece of software recover data from a bad hard drive or a hard drive that has been accidentally formatted.

I discovered this software when I accidentally formatted my work laptop which was running Gentoo Linux.  Its a long story as to how I formatted the hard drive but I didn’t have a backup of my data so I was basically screwed, or so I thought.  I did some Google searches and came across Testdisk.  Once I figured out how to use it I managed to restore my system back to the original Dell Windows XP installation.  Yes that is correct it restored and booted.   I realised that I restore to wrong data and thought that I was now really screwed but I fired up the software again and was able to total restore my Linux system.  If memory serves me I had to reconfigure Grub but my system was restored and my data was safe.  Needless to say I was very very happy.  Sorry I don’t have many details on what I did to recover my data but it was over 3 years ago that I did this.

I am basically writing this post for two reason; 1) to let you know how awesome this software is and 2) I always forget the name of this software and it takes me 20-30 minutes to find it when I need it to recover data, so I am using this as a bookmark.

This video was taken from the Solar Dynamics Observatory launch on February 11, 2010.  This awesome sonic boom happens around the 1:30 mark of the video.

A sun dog is a prismatic bright spot in the sky caused by sun shining through ice crystals. The Atlas V rocket exceeded the speed of sound in this layer of ice crystals, making the shock wave visible from the ground. The announcer can be heard in the video saying, “The vehicle is now supersonic.”

As we all know, Tiger Woods just got caught cheating on his wife and like all good celebrity gossip there are good jokes to follow:

  • Tiger Woods is so rich that he owns lots of expensive cars, now he has a hole in one.
  • What’s the difference between a car and a golf ball? Tiger can drive a ball 400 yards.
  • Tiger Woods wasn’t seriously injured in the crash, but he’s still below par.
  • What were Tiger Woods and his wife doing out at 2.30 in the morning? They went clubbing
  • Tiger Woods crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree. He couldn’t decide between a wood and an iron.
  • Why was Elin using a 7 iron. She was working on a bad lie.
  • I heard Tiger is trying to blame his crash on Cadillac, as he was driving an Escalade. Typical golfer, he drives into a tree and blames the Caddy.
  • If you make it out of your own driveway safely this morning… you can say that you out drove Tiger Woods.
  • Elin Nordegren got hired today as a consultant. She’s teaching Phil Mickelson how to beat Tiger.
  • What does an arctic seal pup and Tiger Woods have in common..? They have both been beaten with a club by a Norwegian
  • Apparently the police asked Tiger’s wife how many times she hit him. She said ” I don’t know exactly but put me down for a 5.”

I cant image ever driving a $1 million car, let alone wrecking one.  But that is what this millionaire did in Texas last week.  He is has blamed swerving to miss a pelecan for the cause of the accident, in anycase it makes laugh.  And in a world where everyone has a video camera you better believe it was caught on tape.
