Also, as per Steve Deemer, and per RFC2822 (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2822.txt) Section 3.6. (Field definitions), the &quot;from:&quot; header field is required (in addition to the rcpt from: smtp command), which I would speculate is the issue with his failures.

I got frustrated trying to get netcat to work.
